Hamtramck is taking the next step in shaping a thriving, walkable, and community-centered downtown. In September 2025, the City of Hamtramck and the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) applied to the next level of the Michigan Main Street Program, Select Level. This is one of the state’s most hands-on designations for downtown revitalization, and shows a commitment to investment in the strengthening of the downtown district.
This application was no easy feat, the Community and Economic Development team spent various months completing its 65 components. This process required extensive data creation and analysis regarding downtown properties and their current uses. The Summer Youth Interns supported the engagement of this initiative, and visited 150 DDA businesses, speaking to around 100 owners and managers. They also captured beautiful images of our downtown, updating the City’s database of images to use for digital materials.
Through this program, we aim to strengthen Hamtramck’s historic core by building on our city’s rich cultural diversity, supporting local entrepreneurs, improving public spaces, and fostering design that reflects our unique identity. The application marks the next phase in years of community-driven planning, public engagement, and partnership across local and regional organizations.
We’re currently awaiting official selection from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC).
