Overview

Duties & Responsibilities

The City of Hamtramck Downtown Development Authority supports people, projects, and partnerships that further the economic growth and stability of a thriving Hamtramck. The DDA consists of two subcommittees: 1) Economic Vitality & Design and 2) Organization and Promotion.

Appointment Process

(Recodified Tax Increment Financing Act MCL 125.4204, Hamtramck Code of Ordinances, Chapter 153)

The authority shall be under the supervision and control of a Board of Directors consisting of the Mayor of the city and not less than eight nor more than 12 members appointed by the Mayor, subject to approval by the City Council. Not less than a majority of the members shall be persons having an interest in property in the downtown district. At least one director shall be a resident of the downtown district, if the downtown district has 100 or more persons residing within it. The terms of the directors shall be for four years with terms beginning July 1 and ending June 30 or upon the appointment of a successor.

Michigan Main Street

You’ve heard the exciting news that businesses in Hamtramck’s DDA are eligible to apply for a $25,000 grant from Michigan Main Street! This is possible because Hamtramck has been designated a Select Level Main Street Community, all thanks to the hard work of our Downtown Development Authority team.

Important 2026 Application Dates:

  • Complete applications are due by email to iallaway@hamtramckcity.gov by Friday April 3rd
  • A subcommittee of the DDA will review the applications and score them based on the criteria explained in the Match on Main Overview memo, before submitting selected applications to the State by Monday April 20th

Dates & Times

Beginning in 2026, the DDA Board of Directors will be meeting on the third Wednesday of each month at 6:05pm on the third floor of City Hall (3401 Evaline). The meetings were previously on Thursdays. Meetings are open to the public.

Economic Vitality and Design Committee

About the Committee

The mission of the Economic Vitality and Design Committee is to promote, encourage, and facilitate the development of responsible and properly planned business growth within the community in order to expand and strengthen the local economy and improve the quality of life enjoyed by locals and visitors.

One main purpose of the committee is to oversee the Downtown Sign and Façade Improvement Grant Program. We are currently seeking grants to restart this program.
